The third Saturday of October is Sweetest Day, which neither men nor women celebrate. It began as a day to do something sweet for orphans and the disadvantaged, but it has now blossomed into a romantic occasion.
According to About.com, Sweetest Day was created in Cleveland, Ohio, by Herbert Kingston, an employee of a candy manufacturer who wanted to do something sweet for Cleveland’s often-forgotten orphans and others. Beginning in 1922, Kingston began providing these individuals with candy boxes. During the Great Depression, the festival gained a great deal of popularity due to the involvement of cinema stars in the distribution of sweets. The day evolved into a day in which individuals may display their affection for whoever they pleased, and later became a romantic holiday. It originated in Ohio, but its popularity has expanded to other states throughout time.
