George Jung used Richard Barile in his cocaine smuggling business with Carlos Lehder and the Colombian gang. The goal was to import cocaine from Colombia into the United States, with Richard Barile handling distribution.

Carlos Lehder and George Jung met at Danbury as cellmates. Jung instructed Lehder about smuggling, and Lehder introduced Jung to the cartel. Jung was always cautious to introduce Barile to Lehder out of concern that he would be removed from the operation. Later, he did introduce the two men, and Jung’s worst fears were realised when Lehder betrayed him and went straight through Barile. Although Lehder ultimately betrayed Jung, George was able to recover, earning more than $100 million from various schemes at the time.
