In Italian mythology, a malocchio prayer is part of a rite to rid oneself of the malocchio, often known as the “evil eye.” Tradition dictates that the prayer is most effective on Christmas Eve, according to the superstition.

Before the prayer, it must be determined whether a person has been cursed with the malocchio by another individual. By adding three drops of olive oil to a bowl of water, a friend could diagnose malocchio. If the oil takes the shape of an eye, then the evil eye is present. Those present make the sign of the cross and repeat “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” as the drops separate. The participants then make the sign of the cross on the hands of the sick person and recite the following prayer three times: “Father, this prayer is being said for (name), and I pray that it works in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
