Thais Baker was the estranged second wife of professional golfer Fred Couples. Baker died in 2009 following a long fight with breast cancer, leaving behind two children from a previous marriage: Gigi, age 18, and Oliver, age 16. At the time of her passing, Oliver and Couples remained close, although Gigi and the golfer did not communicate.
In 1998, shortly after being diagnosed with the condition, Baker wed Couples. The couple broke up in 2005 and attempted reconciliation in 2007, but the endeavour lasted only six months. In late 2008, Baker’s health resurfaced and deteriorated. Although the couple was separated, they never officially divorced. Baker continued to reside in the couple’s expansive Santa Barbara, California mansion until her death, despite the fact that they had been going through divorce proceedings for three years.
While competing in the Northern Trust Open, about two hours south of their homes, couples learned of Baker’s passing. He debated withdrawing, but ultimately opted to complete the tournament.
Baker’s departure was not the first time Couples encountered adversity; the pro lost his mother to cancer at age 34 and his father to leukaemia two years later, and his first wife committed suicide in 2001.
