Truth versus Fiction in the Film

In the film, John’s kid requires a heart transplant, and he takes extreme steps to ensure that his son receives the necessary medical care despite lacking the financial resources to do so. This scenario sparked discussion over the chance that someone would commit the crime of kidnapping for medical care. Even the film’s director and lead actor stated in an interview that John’s acts in the film are severe. This is a legitimate belief, given that those without health insurance have alternative options for paying for medical care.

Class 2 Crime

Although eJohn Q is a work of fiction, John’s activities in the film are crimes in the real world. In the film, the protagonist was accused of attempted murder, armed criminal activity, and kidnapping. In Illinois, he was convicted guilty of kidnapping, a Class 2 felony. If John Q. were a real person, he could have been sentenced to between three and seven years in prison for this offence. However, other variables can impact the judge’s ultimate conclusion.

The Heart Transplant Price

A heart transplant is an expensive treatment that costs more than $1 million. Patients must also pay for anti-rejection medication, transportation, and living expenses in addition to the cost of surgery. These expenses may be covered by commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, advocacy groups, charitable organisations, or fundraising campaigns. In some instances, they are able to cover the entire cost of the treatment. Others may be required to pay a portion of the expenditures on their own. m

Those Pending a Heart Transplant

In the film, doctors identify a suitable heart relatively fast. Some patients can wait over a year for a heart to become available. Because there is so little time to complete the treatment at that point, the surgery is performed as soon as feasible. They may even stay at the hospital or nearby during the waiting period, particularly if they live a considerable distance from the facility. They must remain within a short distance of the hospital for at least the first several weeks following surgery.

A True Life John Q

Although the film is fictional, a similar incident occurred in Texas. In 2015, George Pickering used a firearm to gain entry to his son’s hospital room while he was on life support. He was afraid that the hospital team was going too swiftly to remove the young man’s life support and harvest his organs. The father surrendered to authorities, was charged with a state jail crime, and served time for his acts. The son survived.
