John Q. Archibald is a fictitious character in a 2002 Denzel Washington film titled John Q. Archibald. The main character of the film holds a prisoner at an emergency room in order to obtain a heart transplant for his ailing son. There’s no genuine John Q. Truth versus Fiction in the Film
In the film, John’s kid requires a heart transplant, and he takes extreme steps to ensure that his son receives the necessary medical care despite lacking the financial resources to do so. This scenario sparked discussion over the chance that someone would commit the crime of kidnapping for medical care. Even the film’s director and lead actor stated in an interview that John’s acts in the film are severe. This is a legitimate belief, given that those without health insurance have alternative options for paying for medical care.

Although eJohn Q is a work of fiction, John’s activities in the film are crimes in the real world. Although the film is fictional, a similar incident occurred in Texas. In 2015, George Pickering used a firearm to gain entry to his son’s hospital room while he was on life support. He was afraid that the hospital team was going too swiftly to remove the young man’s life support and harvest his organs. The father surrendered to authorities, was charged with a state jail crime, and served time for his acts. The son survived.
