Herge, a Belgian cartoonist, created the comic book series Tintin, whose exploits are shared with his dog Snowy. Snowy’s nickname in the original series was Milou, which was also the artist’s pet name for his first fiancée.

Herge has said that he chose the white fox terrier as Snowy since it was a popular breed while he was doing the comic. The artist also found inspiration from a cafe he frequently visited; the owner of the cafe was a proud owner of a fox terrier.

At first in the series, Tintin and Snowy are able to speak directly. However, as more important characters are introduced, the terrier’s speaking part is dropped in favour of a comic non-verbal element.
