Peter, James (son of Zebedee), John, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus, Simon, and Judas Iscariot are listed as the apostles in the Gospel of Mark. The sequence of the apostles in the Gospel of Luke is identical to that of Matthew, with a few exceptions. Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon, Judas (Thaddeus), and Judas Iscariot are listed in this order.
Although each list has a different sequence, the first name on all of them is Simon Peter. In Matthew 16:18-19, Jesus gave Peter a specific place in the leadership of his church, although the precise nature and degree of this leadership is debated by various Christian groups.
According to the Gospel of Matthew, Judas Iscariot, who always appears last on lists, betrayed Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and then hanged himself. As a result, the Book of Acts indicates that the Apostles chose Matthias to replace Judas Iscariot.
