Does Eddie Murphy Have an Oscar?

Eddie Murphy is one of the most popular and successful comedic actors of the last few decades. He first rose to fame on Saturday Night Live in the early 1980s and then went on to star in a string of hit comedies like Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, and The Nutty Professor. Murphy has left audiences around the world in stitches with his energetic performances and spot-on impressions. His net worth is $200M. That’s impressive.

Despite his massive success as a comedic actor, Eddie Murphy has never won an Academy Award (Oscar). He has been nominated once for his supporting role in the 2006 musical drama Dreamgirls, but did not end up winning.

In Dreamgirls, Murphy played soul singer James “Thunder” Early, a character loosely based on James Brown and Marvin Gaye and his role in Lion King.

Take a look at his best movies here:

Murphy showed off his dramatic abilities in the film and received strong praise for his performance. Many felt that after over 20 years in the business, Murphy was finally getting recognition as a serious actor. His costars Jennifer Hudson and Beyoncé Knowles both earned Oscar nominations too, with Hudson winning Best Supporting Actress.

Unfortunately for Murphy, the 2006 Best Supporting Actor prize went to Alan Arkin for his role in Little Miss Sunshine. Arkin was considered a surprise win over Murphy, who had gained momentum leading up to the Oscars. Murphy’s loss was likely due to a combination of factors, including the overall mixed reception to Dreamgirls and a very strong field of supporting actors that year.

Since his nomination for Dreamgirls, Eddie Murphy has not received any additional Oscar recognition. He continues to work steadily in movies, returning to family comedies like Daddy Day Care as well as dramatic roles in films like Mr. Church. Murphy also recently reprised his role as Prince Akeem in Coming 2 America, the sequel to one of his most iconic films.

As one of the most prominent African-American comedians and actors ever, many feel Eddie Murphy is overdue to finally take home Oscar gold. But at age 62, and without any major critically acclaimed roles in recent years, Murphy’s chances seem to be dwindling as time passes. Given his celebrated career, however, he will always be remembered as an Oscar-worthy talent even without a trophy on his mantle.
