Jennifer and Sam have been in a relationship for 11 years!
And their love has gone viral.
In an emotional video posted by HSBC Bank in Taiwan, Jennifer reveals that her conservative parents disowned her and refused to accept her relationship with Sam after she came out to them as a lesbian. Jennifer's parents refused to attend her wedding.
In an interview segment, both Jennifer and Sam say that they were afraid to come out publicly for fear of being picked on and for fear of placing their respective jobs in jeopardy.
"Before we came out we were always afraid. We were hesitant to talk about it because we were worried people might make fun of us," Jennifer said. "I worried most about work. I was concerned it would stop clients banking with HSBC, so I considered it very carefully and realised that some clients were very supportive."
Jennifer was devastated that her parents would not attend her wedding and that her father would not be the one to walk her down the aisle. So it fell to her boss, HSBC Taiwan CEO John Li, to do the honors.
While the couple's relationship is not yet legal in Taiwan, the couple said they would like the wedding to act as message of hope for other LGBT couples.
"In Taiwan we see so many people being discriminated against," Jennifer said. "This wedding is really for the LGBTQ community. We hope our action will encourage people and create respect among different communities."
