In "An Extremely Goofy Movie," one of the characters looks down at his hands and asks a simple question: "Did you ever wonder why we wear gloves all the time?"
That question was all it took for the YouTube channel Vox to begin a full-scale investigation into finding the answer to this seemingly off-the-cuff question.
What they found is that there are a number of different reasons for cartoon characters wearing hand-coverings.
Some reasons are practical, some had more dubious origins, and some are more symbolic.
One of the reasons, Vox discovers, is that it made animation more productive and efficient.
The hand, it turns out, is a very difficult part of the body to animate. All those knuckles and digits would result in animators working overtime to do them justice.
By adding white, featureless gloves, the hands became far quicker and easier to draw. They also allowed for hand gestures to stand out on typically dark cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and others.
