Netflix's newest superhero series Iron Fist has found itself steeped in controversy for whitewashing a main character that many feel should have been cast with an asian actor.
Furthermore, many feel that an unhappy white billionaire that uses martial arts is probably not the hero that people are in search of right now.
Iron Fist's female star, Jessica Henwick, recently faced down the growing wave of whitewashing controversy from her own perspective.
She has seen a number of desultory comments about her--an Asian American being okay with acting in this show.
Fenwick began by saying:
I’m part of the Asian community. I’m Asian. I’m an actor. If anyone understands the conversation, it’s me. I’ve lived and breathed it.
When I came on to ‘Iron Fist,’ it was really Colleen Wing that sold it for me. I thought it was a good opportunity to see a really strong female Asian American.
