The internet (and free world) is exploding in fear, wonder, and curiosity of what, exactly, a Donald Trump presidency will unleash. But... what about Hillary?
Social media shed a bittersweet tear last night when a random post and photo went immediately viral. In it? A random woman. A mother. And Citizen Hillary Clinton. The woman's name is Margot Gerster. She isn't a member of the Clinton campaign. She isn't a surrogate. She isn't a pundit or a senator or even a local dog catcher. Nope! She's just a mother who, depressed from the recent election results, decided to go for a walk in the woods.
Gerster told her story this way:
Ive been feeling so heartbroken since yesterday's election and decided what better way to relax than take my girls hiking. So I decided to take them to one of favorite places in Chappaqua. We were the only ones there and it was so beautiful and relaxing. As we were leaving, I heard a bit of rustling coming towards me and as I stepped into the clearing there she was, Hillary Clinton and Bill with their dogs doing exactly the same thing as I was. I got to hug her and talk to her and tell her that one of my most proudest moments as a mother was taking Phoebe with me to vote for her. She hugged me and thanked me and we exchanged some sweet pleasantries and then I let them continue their walk. Now, I'm not one for signs but I think ill definitely take this one. So proud. #iamstillwithher #lovetrumpshate #keepfighting #lightfollowsdarkness
And then, the photo. Even yours truly shed a brief tear. Smiled just a little. There's Hillary. No suit. No forced smile. No podium. No cable news chyron. Just... Hillary. In a loose-fitting, comfy coat. Her hair gently mussed from the wind. And I thought: she's okay. And then I thought more: she's free. Whatever happens the next four years, she cannot be blamed. She can just walk her dogs with her husband in the woods and do normal people things. And, my God, she deserves it. Gerster added that the photo itself was taken by Bill. She wished she had asked their secret service detail to snap the photo so the former President could also be in it. Thank you for your service, Hillary. Thank you for your efforts. Thank you for all you've done and tried to do. Now you can go back to enjoying being a private citizen. You deserve every last moment of it.
