Here's a video of Ellen with Rob and Reece:
The couple always knew they wanted to adopt children through the foster care system. Though they only wanted one child, when the call came offering them a brother and system, they took both so the pair wouldn't be separated. Rob said:
Within six months we got another call for a six-month old and a two-year old and the next thing you know we went from two guys to six people.
The children came from abusive background, and one suffers from fetal alcohol syndrome. The Scheers were determined, however, to deliver a loving home for all their kids. In fact, after reading that survivors of fetal alcohol syndrome often make significant developmental progress when interacting with animals and eating organic foods, the caring parents bought a farm for the family to share. Rob commented:
I don’t know if I was ready for [dealing with the kind of trauma our kids had been through], but we just made it work. That’s what family’s about, you just make it work. They don’t care that we’re white and we’re gay, they care that we love them.
