Last night, Rachel Maddow grabbed the internet's attention when she tweeted that she had gotten her hands on President Donald Trump's elusive tax returns.
The internet promptly exploded in a flurry of exclamation points. Conservatives cried "fake news." Liberals cheered "at last."
Could this really be it? The bombshell revelation that would tank the Trump administration?
Perhaps the Maddow folks realized how potentially misleading their initial tweet was. They sent out a clarification before going to air to try and tamp the initial reactions.
Unfortunately, this tweet did not spread nearly as quickly or far. America tuned in to MSNBC at 9PM expecting the end of the Trump presidency, only to discover something far less dramatic.
Liberals are torn on the report. Many say it was journalistic "clickbait." Others are saying it was fantastic reporting that may have just opened a wormhole to something far more interesting now that the floodgates have been flung open.
Conservatives, however, are far more aligned: they think Maddow messed up. And they let this opinion be known very loudly.
