Samoans are from the sovereign nation of Samoa, whereas Hawaiians are from the U.S. state of Hawaii. Since 1919, Samoans have migrated to Hawaii, and many Hawaiians are also of Samoan heritage.
Europeans were the first to migrate to Hawaii, beginning with the English and the Americans who arrived as explorers, missionaries, and businesspeople. From Russia, Portugal, Spain, Norway, and Germany, other Caucasian races migrated to Hawaii. These individuals intermarried with the indigenous Hawaiians and other migrants to Hawaii.
In Hawaii, the Samoans are not the only group that have migrated. Other Asian nations, including China, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines, sent immigrants to Hawaii in the 20th century. Today’s Hawaiians are frequently a mixture of their original Hawaiian ancestry and lineage from one of the groups that came to the area. Historically, all non-Hawaiians were referred to as “haloe” (non-Hawaiians), but this term today exclusively refers to those of European descent.
The first Samoan migration to Hawaii happened in 1919, followed by migrations of 1,000 Samoans in 1952 and more than 13,000 Samoans in 1970.
