The average IQ of 13-year-olds and individuals of all ages is 100. Normal IQ scores range from 85 to 115, and scores compare the test performance of individuals within a specified age group. The results of the test are then normed and plotted on a bell curve.
IQ tests assess reasoning and problem-solving abilities, but not imagination, practical intelligence, inquisitiveness, or social aptitude. IQ-based labels are based on standard deviations from the norm of 100. Scores between 115 and 130 are deemed above ordinary, and scores between 70 and 84 are deemed borderline mental impairment. Ratings above 130 suggest exceptional intelligence, while scores below 70 indicate mental handicaps.
