A young woman stole money from an Uber driver in August. This month the video was posted on Reddit causing it to go viral on YouTube.
The woman in question is 18-year-old Gabrielle Canales from New York. The Daily Mail reported on the "breaking news" repeatedly referring to Canales as a "scantily-clad women" implying her style of dress directly related to her dramatic crime spree.
Canales told Buzzfeed that she immediately regretted the theft and gave the money back to the driver in a tip - the total of $5.00. (Of course if she "tipped" him $5.00 and stole $5.00, technically she stiffed him on a tip.)
"The lesson was learned that same day. That’s why the gentlemen was paid back. It was me being childish. To the Uber driver, my sincere apologies."
The apology and repayment may have been sufficient but Canales didn't help her case by mocking the story on social media and being combative with critics.
if you don’t like me then your just not going to like me because i’m not here to please people. i did something 3 months ago and the man was paid back 3 months ago before it went viral, sorry i refuse to give attention to something that’s irrelevant to me.— G A B R I E L L E (@almightygaby) November 12, 2017

time to state REAL FACTS.— G A B R I E L L E (@almightygaby) November 10, 2017
- i was using uber before/since tuesday before i went “viral”
- daily mail never spoke to me or had any proof but the video of me back in august, which i apologized for already
-uber was paid back in august. pic.twitter.com/mwtWxLkxmg
As expected Twitter users clapped back with some harsh comments of their own.
What real facts? You still stole from his tip jar. And just because your friend tipped him back, it means nothing, it was his money to begin with, so damn well she should've returned it.— My Fitness Euphoria (@myfiteuphoria) November 10, 2017
IT👏🏽 DOESN'T 👏🏽MATTER 👏🏽 IF 👏🏽YOU 👏🏽PAYED 👏🏽HIM 👏🏽BACK 👏🏽YOU 👏🏽SHOULDN'T 👏🏽HAVE 👏🏽STOLEN 👏🏽HIS 👏🏽MONEY 👏🏽IN 👏🏽THE 👏🏽FIRST 👏🏽PLACE 👏🏽— keyoni marie (@hellakeyoni) November 11, 2017
you don’t sound sorry, and deliberately taking money from the working class is not a “mistake”, it’s a crime. also, bc you didn’t tip him in cash, now the money gotta go through the tax system so basically u still didnt pay him back fully. lastly, wtf is a irregulardless— river (@vladimirlenins) November 12, 2017
Unfortunately, some news organizations couldn't focus on the crime the girl committed without also referencing her attire.
Maybe the next time this teenager decides to steal she'll wear a sweater.
