What Happens When You Crack Your Knuckles?

We've all done "it." Sometimes by force of habit, sometimes because "it" just feels so good. Some people do "it" all the time. Yep, cracking your knuckles. (What did you think I meant?) People have been cracking their knuckles since the beginnings of time. Aside from annoying the people around you, it's widely believed that the consequence of cracking your joints is getting arthritis. But is this true or false?

According to an article from A-Plus, scientists' have revealed that there is not any actual correlation between arthritis and repeated knuckle-cracking. Some studies have cited swelling or pains that may occur, but there isn't enough hard data to make real conclusions about those claims.

So just what is happening when you crack your knuckles? A recent video from Vox explains that all the sound that your fingers are making is really just gas that's being released. The pressure from the release of that gas is what causes the loud noise that we have grown accustomed to.
