Now, gay Chechens seeking asylum in other countries are having trouble securing visas. To make matters worse for those individuals, the U.S. has reportedly claimed that it will not be issuing visas to people from Chechnya.
According to Svetlana Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian LGBT Network, a group of about forty men are attempting to get out of the country. So far, only two have secured visas to safe countries.
Many countries, including the U.S. and in the European Union, have expressed outrage at the atrocities in Chechnya after the story was first reported by Novaya Gazeta, a Russian newspaper.
