System Has Been A Rare Commodity Since Christmas
Nostalgia is a powerful thing. It's the reason we're sitting on 427,000 movie franchises all based on classic 80's and 90's television shows. Why build something new from the ground up when the fan base will already support your endeavor?

Unfortunately, the video game masters of nostalgia are also the video game knuckleheads. Nintendo knows their fans love their older games just as much as their newer games, sometimes more, but nothing beats playing a classic run-through of Final Fantasy or Donkey Kong. Not many people still have working NES systems, which was why the NES Classic, a smaller, lighter version loaded with 30 games, was such a blessing. For a while, at least.
At least it was, until Nintendo announced on Thursday that effective April, they would no longer be producing the NES Classic mini console.
