A phenomena called the "Recency Effect" is responsible for last year's Academy Awards Best Picture win for SPOTLIGHT. Interest for SPOTLIGHT gained traction later in the Oscar race as Google searches for the movie spiked past other nominees that exhibited popularity earlier on.
