Groening explained at the Comic-Con panel this all started when the executives at 20th Century first told them to back off because of their, "#1 with Racists" joke on the helicopter.
“Then Bill O’Reilly called us pinheads and look what happened,” Groening said. As was reported, Bill O'Reilly was fired from his prime-time Fox News program following multiple sexual harassment allegations.
Groening then lead the crowd in San Diego in a loud, enthusiastic "Lock him up!" chant. This riffs the "Lock her up!" chants that Trump crowds would often chant towards Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Fortunately, executive producer Matt Selman promised all the fans in attendance the series will continue to stick to their guns and make light of those who deserve it.
“Our show holds up a Springfield mirror to society, so that never fails to inspire us,” Selman said during the panel, referring to the Simpsons' hometown.
