Pictures of Caitlyn, the Straffordshire terrier mix who had her mouth taped shut by her owner, circulated on the internet nearly two years ago. Since then, the pup has become a symbol of animal-cruelty for advocates across the nation. Her owner is finally being brought to justice.
Caitlyn was found in May 2015 with her muzzle aggressively taped shut. This caused her snout to swell and her tongue to turn black due to lack of blood-flow. Last June, she underwent reconstructive surgery at Veterinary Specialty Care in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and it took a little longer than expected, but was ultimately successful. Caitlyn's now leading a much happier life at the Charleston Animal Society shelter in South Carolina!
Her former owner, William Leonard Dodson, 42, was sentenced this past Friday, March 24th, to 5 years in prison, to be served concurrently with an unrelated 15-year federal gun charge. This is South Carolina's maximum punishment for animal cruelty, but some wish the sentence was more severe.
Circuit Judge Markley Dennis himself described what Caitlyn had been through as "hell on earth". While handing down sentencing, he reportedly told former-owner Dodson, "I'm not trying to be mean, but I wish I could give you more."
