Protein is an essential building block in the human diet.

It builds muscle, keeps your hair and nails growing, and in general-you literally cannot live without protein.  It is what connects the double helix of your DNA.

Protein is most easily accessible through animal products.

The most direct and healthy sources of protein come from poultry, meats, dairy products, and eggs.  Vegan diets do not incorporate any animal products, and therefore, it is difficult for somebody following the strict plan to get their daily recommended values of protein.
