President Donald Trump announced he will ban transgender people from serving in the military in any capacity, an abrupt reversal of an Obama administration decision which would have allowed them to serve openly.
The backlash was harsh and swift. One of the more prominent of Trump's detractors was Joseph Biden, our former vice president. He sent out the following message from his personal Twitter account:
Every patriotic American who is qualified to serve in our military should be able to serve. Full stop.— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) July 26, 2017
Responses ran the gamut from sarcastic...
My grandpa fudged an eye test, w/ the help of recruiters, to serve during WWII. Shame on anyone trying to push people away.— Erin Alexa (@Erin_Alexa_) July 26, 2017
. America misses you, Joe!— Diane Pavia (@diane_pavia) July 26, 2017
We need you and other Presidents and VPs to speak up against this man who has made a mockery of this office.— She Persisted (@roncon2509) July 26, 2017
I stand with my transgender family. Moreso, I will fight with everything I have against Trump's hateful, shameful and un-American agenda— Leslie Herod (@leslieherod) July 26, 2017
I agree Joe!! If someone is willing to sign up and serve I don't care if they purple and green! I'm thankful to all of them!— Jill Messier (@JillpaulisJill) July 26, 2017
Reportedly, Trump's decision to bar transgender individuals from military service came as a response to an internal House Republican fight over sex reassignment surgery which threatened funding for his border wall. White House sources told reporters that Trump's sudden decision "was, in part, a last-ditch attempt to save a House proposal full of his campaign promises that was on the verge of defeat."
