Planned Parenthood leaders and Ivanka Trump met, shortly after the inauguration, in the hopes of finding solid ground. Instead, that agenda failed to find its footing.
The purpose of the covert meeting with Planned Parenthood's president, Cecile Richards, was to educate Trump on Planned Parenthood's services including cancer screenings, HIV tests, and the fact that federal funding isn't used for abortions.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens emphasized that Richards' intent was to convince Trump to advocate against the GOP's agenda to push for defunding abortion services.
Laguens told Politico that Richards' attempted to clarify some of the GOP's common misconceptions. "The purpose of the meeting, from Cecile’s point of view, was to make sure that Ivanka fully understood what Planned Parenthood does, how it is funded, and why it would be a terrible idea for Planned Parenthood to be removed from being able to see Medicaid patients," she said.

"The main thing that Cecile Richards was doing was explaining that the money doesn’t actually go to abortions — we get reimbursed the same way a hospital does. We were clearing up misinformation about how this works."
Ivanka's silence on women's health issues didn't help the meeting, unfortunately.
