"We have two other writers on the staff, Brian Cogman and Dave Hill.
The four of us get together in a room, we break down the upcoming season, then we split up and write different sections of the outline. We have the last one we'll ever do, for Season 8, which is a little sad, so we have an 140 page outline for ... it's only gonna be six episodes for the final season, then we divvy up the episodes.
Dave Hill will write the season premiere, Brian Cogman will write 802 and then we'll write the other four. Dan and I just pick halves; we fight over who gets to write which half, who gets to kill Sansa..."
Usually it took two minutes to divide the halves, this time it was 18 back and forth emails: 'I'll take this scene if you take that scene.' Because we realized it was the last time we'd be doing this for this show.
While the Sansa murder part was a joke, the rest of the comments were very serious.
The end of Game of Thrones is fast approaching.
In the midst of this sad news, there was also an exciting casting announcement. Pop star and current Top 20 artist Ed Sheeran will make a special guest appearance in season seven of the show.
Sheeran is not the first musician to make an appearance in the epic program, but he is arguably the most famous, popular, and current one.
Benioff explained the reason for the cameo thusly:
We knew that Maisie was a big fan of Ed Sheeran, so for years we tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show so we could surprise Maisie, and this year we finally did it.
