Michelle Elman's Bikini Photo Inspires You to Love Your Body

COMMENTS
Let's face it, we are all self-conscious when it comes to our own body image. We're constantly bombarded with negative messages as to what is beautiful or desirable. TV, billboards, fashion, music, and basically most of our art and culture all reinforce these stereotypes. Michelle Elman's story, therefore, comes as a breath of fresh air. Confronting her own insecurities, Michelle Elman recently posted a photo of herself in a bikini to her Instagram. The photo revealed the scars she has carried with her since childhood. In the caption for the photo, Michelle bemused:
I finally faced up to wearing a bikini and although, I love my body thoroughly and have for many years - this was one of the most difficult things I have ever done, yet once it was on, it was one of the most liberating feelings to know that I wasn’t letting two pieces of material stop me from being comfortable in my own body.
Elman has hydrocephalus, a condition which has resulted in scars on her body from 15 surgeries. Over the course of her life, she has also sustained complications that include a brain tumor, a punctured intestine, an obstructed bowel and a brain cyst. Elman explained to Bustle how she struggled with her body image growing up because of her scars and tried to hide from it. But over time, she became more comfortable and accepting of herself. Through that progression and struggle with her own body, Michelle reached a turning point and realized she didn't want to hide anymore. She reminisced how "hen I was 15 ... I was walking with a friend when we were walking past a door and she exclaimed, 'F*ck, I'm fat.' It was in that moment that I decided I never wanted to be that girl. I didn't want to be the person who constantly insulted themselves and couldn't see their own beauty."

Now a body image coach in London, Michelle is a much stronger and different person than she was in her teenage years. The Instagram photo she posted has gone viral and she is using the attention to help more people feel proud and comfortable in their own skin. Elman told TODAY.com, "I want people to look at the post and realize that they can do it. I tick all the boxes in being overweight, scarred, mixed race and disabled, and it is in these differences we should be proud."

Though she braced herself for negative backlash from internet trolls and haters, Michelle was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming positive comments she has been receiving. The photo has become a hit, and the hashtag #ScarredNotScared campaign seems to be doing a lot of good for people. "What amazed me is the number of people who have got into the pool because of one picture," Michelle told TODAY. "People have messaged me saying they have got into the pool for the first time in 10 years." Click the button below to listen to more about Michelle Elman's body positive story as told by Michelle herself.
